How are students selected?

We partner with regional schools to deliver the societies, providing their Year 12 students the opportunity to apply, with a focus on students who may come from a low-income background or an otherwise under-served community.

We select students who meet key social mobility criteria, and who have demonstrated a strong commitment to their studies and a keen interest in the employer and relevant industry.

Why choose a long-term intervention?

Sustained, long-term career interventions & programmes have been demonstrated to have positive outcomes for young people:

  • Students are not only exposed to new knowledge and skills but the sustained intervention model allows time for new knowledge and skills to embed fully, with opportunities to practise, reflect and become confident.
  • Students get to experience and learn about a variety of roles, meeting multiple colleagues across a plethora of departments and responsibilities.
  • The sustained intervention model requires students to make a commitment to keep showing up for each session, mimicking the workplace but also instilling a greater sense of autonomy and responsbility within the young person.
  • Multiple touchpoints with the same volunteer allow for students and volunteers to build trusted, appropriate relationships which lead to more meaningful interactions and positive impact on the young person’s learning journey.
What does a typical day look like?

A typical day will be approx. 7 hours on-site at the employer office. Students and volunteers will be split into small groups and engage in an ice-breaker, an industry relevant project task or skills development session.

Volunteers will support either a morning or afternoon session, providing key industry engagement and mentorship.

Typical support from volunteers might look like:

  • Problem-solving
  • Goal-setting
  • Working together as a team
  • Asking challenging questions
  • Sharing career insight
What is a volunteer’s role?

Industry Society volunteers are colleagues who want to develop their own mentorship and leadership skills, whilst supporting a young person’s career journey.

The role of a volunteer is to support the students through their tasks, provide constructive feedback, and empower the students to realise their potential.

How are volunteers supported?

All volunteers are provided with a plethora of support from facilitators, including:

A training session that focuses on safeguarding and best practise for engaging with young people

Volunteer resources including session briefing sheets and guidance on how to deliver feedback

A dedicated programme manager

Feedback opportunities after every session
